According to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, the annual traffic has increased for the third year in a row. More and more Silver Spring home owners are using BWI because of airline additions and a terminal enhancement program that brought more amenities and business space to the airport. Condor Airlines now flies to Germany from BWI, and Spirit Airlines serves destinations in Florida and Texas.
According to Governor Martin O’Malley, “The sustained growth and success at BWI Marshall highlights its position as an important business and tourism gateway, as well as a job generator.”
A recent press release by the airport noted that passenger traffic increased 1.3% from 2011, with the airport serving more than 22 million passengers. Additionally, international passenger traffic increased 20.7%, due in part to the addition of airlines like Condor and the routes they serve. Cargo shipments were also up 3.7% year-over-year. July 2012 marked BWI’s best month on record with the airport serving more than 2.2 million people who flew through there.
Paul J. Wiedefeld, Executive Director of BWI, adds, “Last year, we served our 500 millionth customer in the history of this airport. We remain committed to providing excellent customer service and efficient, convenient travel for our passengers.”
BWI Airport is responsible for close to 94,000 jobs, and the business generates $5.6 billion in business revenue each year. Construction has already begun on the terminal enhancement program, which will improve and modernize the passenger terminal facility and provide new services for travelers. Incidentally, the BWI Marshall Observation Gallery will be closed until spring 2013 to accommodate the construction.
Governor O’Malley said, “BWI Marshall is Maryland’s gateway to the world. Together, we have worked hard to create a world-class facility. The recent surge in passenger growth is evidence that our investments in BWI Marshall are paying off. Now, it is time to take the next step and improve the terminal so that we are able to accommodate the growth that we are experiencing today and the continued growth we expect in the future.”
