Cooling Centers Open in Rockville

The last few months in the Rockville, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Olney, and Laytonsville areas have seen temperatures in the triple digits, and have had many Rockville homeowners sweating tirelessly in the dog days of summer. Fortunately for those in the Rockville area who don’t have a great air conditioning set up at home, or just need a break from the menacing heat when they’re walking about the streets of downtown Rockville, the city has opened up “cooling centers,” or indoor facilities that are well air-conditioned and are open to the public to relax in, or bring in their laptops for a day’s work.

The four Rockville buildings providing public cooling centers are:

  • Lincoln Park Community Center, 357 Frederick Ave.
  • Rockville Senior Center, 1150 Carnation Drive
  • Thomas Farm Community Center, 700 Fallsgrove Drive
  • Twinbrook Community Recreation Center, 12920 Twinbrook Parkway

The cooling centers all have common areas that are free to the public, and have normal business hours. For those who would like to get a little more out of the cooling centers, facilities such as computer labs and exercise rooms, as well as some educational programs, are available for a nominal fee.

In addition to providing a relaxing home away from home to escape the Rockville heat for families and professionals during these hot months, cooling centers can also be a life-saving option for Rockville’s elderly population. Taking care of older family members by giving them the respite of a temperature-controlled environment can increase their quality of life and comfort, especially if they’re the type that need some urging to leave the house.

Children will also appreciate the cool air in these centers, but remember that adults must accompany any children who come to the cooling centers. To hear more about this program and its hours, call the City of Rockville at 240-314-5000.
