One Stoplight Worth Catching: Highland, Maryland

Vintage Blue Highland MarylandAfter a little encouraging from her husband, Carey Buckner quit her 14 year career in ultrasound and rented a “cute little house” off of Route 108 in Highland, Maryland. There she officially started her home décor business where she refinishes furniture and sells handmade glass beads, jewelry, furniture knobs and lights, along with a variety of new furnishings. Now in its second month of operation, Buckner’s shop – Vintage Blue – is a welcome addition to the one-stoplight downtown crossroads that is surrounded by fields full of horses and old farm houses, along with newly built communities of luxury homes.

Blink and you’ll miss quaint, historic downtown Highland – but don’t, because this tiny town has a lot to offer. Less than a fifteen minute drive from Olney or Columbia, and less than five minutes from Clarksville, the town of Highland is growing and welcoming more small businesses and new residents each month.

Highland is home to Boarman’s Old Fashioned Meat Market – a Highland tradition still located at the country crossroads where it began 50 years ago. You can also find Highland Groomery/Kitty Bed and Breakfast, Cloud 9 Salon, Twist and Turn Tavern which features a house bluegrass/rock band called the Highland Hill Boys, along with a local liquor store, a Subway, and even a martial arts studio. The area is also home to the Highland Inn – a casual fine dining restaurant and catering venture from Executive Chef Brian Boston.

Right next to Buckner’s new shop is Serendipity – a fashion and accessories boutique located in a preserved harness shop from the late 1800s.

“I love that the local businesses are mom and pop types of shops – not big corporations – and I just love that everyone knows each other,” says Buckner. “I am so excited to be Serendipity’s neighbor and hope that we add additional charm to an already fantastic corner of businesses.”

The community is something that not only brought Buckner and Vintage Blue to Highland, but keeps people coming each year in celebration of the annual Highland Day. Highland Day takes the fall by storm when the crossroads of Route 108 and 216 are overwhelmed with visitors and residents enjoying live entertainment, pie eating contests, wine tastings, dance demonstrations, and the very popular microbrew beer garden.
