History

The farmland that would become Olney was settled in 1800. The first residents, Sarah Brooke and Dr. Charles Farquhar, named the area for the hometown of their favorite English poet, William Cowper. Their home, Olney House, still stands.

The area was tense during the War of 1812, but the Civil War caused hardly a ripple. Area residents sympathized with the south, but remained neutral during the war, due to their proximity to the capital. St. John’s Episcopal Church is another historic site, built in 1842, which still stands today.
